Conflicts Of Interest

Scheduled monthly in 2023

Overview

Join Terrance M. Booysen in this 2-hour Conflicts of Interest governance training session where delegates are provided insights that assist them understand the necessities of not just doing the right thing when it comes to declaring one’s personal interests that may be perceived, or actually be in conflict with those of the organisation for which they serve, but more importantly, how to deal with it!

No matter what your position is in your organisation, the chances are very good that you will be faced with some form of conflict which may present a legal, ethical and/or moral dilemma.

Either way, irrespective of what your position is within the organisation, when a conflict of interest arises -- and especially where there is tension between the organisation’s interests and your own -- it will need to be dealt with as quickly as possible.

Leaving the conflict unattended, has the potential to create untold damage to the organisation, and most certainly also to the conflicted person.  In reality, without the proper support mechanisms, and the correct knowledge of reporting conflicts of interests in the workplace, the chances of reprisal are very high and this may lead to a number of negative consequences.

As an ethical organisation, it is essential that all its key stakeholders abide by a clear set of guidelines which provide an unambiguous code, policy guidelines and procedures that deal with conflicts of interest.  Whilst there are legal provisions and requirements that must be followed, in reality these are often brushed over, or worse, brushed aside for self-serving interests!

With the rampant crime and corruption in South Africa, ‘small’ conflicts of interest have the ability to rapidly escalate.  An organisations with weak governance systems are prime targets for people with selfish motivation and agendas.  Expectedly, the organisation must be protected through the organisation’s systems and processes, and often these are also weak, leaving the organisation exposed to these risks.

In light of the inevitability of conflicts of interest arising within an organisation – and given that they must be properly managed -- it is essential for organisations to have an appropriate and detailed policy in place to deal with these situations.
