Corruption - A silent cancer devouring our society (2014-09-03)

As a strategic partner of the 4th Annual Southern Africa Anti-Corruption Summit, CGF Research Institute (Pty) Ltd (‘CGF’) is proud to be a part of this auspicious event; which is organised by C5, with support from its Lead Sponsor KPMG.
Being established as the leading Anti-Corruption event in Southern Africa, the Summit brings together regulators, corporations, private practice law firms and compliance industry experts from across Southern Africa.

Terrance M. Booysen, ‎CEO at CGF explains why the Anti-Corruption Summit is now an annual ‘must attend’ diary date for the compliance community in Southern Africa:

“Quite simply, the rate of corruption in just the South African public service sector -- estimated at R30 billion per annum -- being lost is not only a matter of theft, but a betrayal of the people’s trust.  The losses incurred by South African taxpayers can be likened to a silent cancer which is devouring our society.  The current lip-service being paid to this scourge is not only the cause of massive human suffering, it is also one of the main causes which deters our foreign investment and ultimately suffocates business and society.”

The event, which will be taking place in Johannesburg on the 18th and 19th November 2014, features an unparalleled line-up of 50 leading speakers, 12 interactive workshops and training sessions, an exclusive ‘C’ suite executive roundtable and is free to attend for all Government and Corporate attendees.

Over 50% of attendees are from multinational corporations, 17% are from government, regulators and enforcers, who along with 16 of Southern Africa’s most important industries participate annually in sharing and gaining invaluable knowledge, expertise and insight.  Some of the attendees include; Baker Hughes, Anglo American, Saab, Barclays, Aveng Group, Samsung, PetroSA, Massmart, The World Bank, Daimler and Sasol.

The 4th Annual Southern Africa Anti-Corruption Summit is considered one of the most comprehensive and relevant programmes in Southern Africa, and it guarantees to deliver delegates an exceptional learning and networking experience.  Moreover, the Summit will provide delegates relevant and valuable ‘takeaways’; allowing them by correct application to address their anti-corruption challenges and avoid violations.  Some of the main themes include:
  • Maintaining a robust due diligence checklist in light of the Protection of Private Information (POPI) Act
  • The U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act update: Exploring recent landmark settlements and investigations
  • Protecting the Board: Lessons learned from recent enforcements by the Competition Commission
  • Ensuring that compliance with B-BBEE Codes doesn’t compromise anti-corruption best practices
  • Creating a practical Gifts and Entertainment Policy for both public and private business partners.

The stellar speaker line-up  includes the most important regulators and enforcers from the region and from across the globe including:  Clifford Collings, Head: Anti-Corruption & Security, The Revenue Service (SARS), Nicola Bonucci, Director for Legal Affairs, Organisation for Economic  Co-operation & Development (OECD), Akere T. Muna, Sanctions Commissioner, Barrister at Law (Lincoln’s Inn, London) African Development Bank  and Rose Nunu Seretse, Director General, Directorate on Corruption and Economic  Crime (Botswana), to name but a few.
